Essay regarding Denial as a Theme of «In the Lake of the Woods».

The American Heritage Dictionary defines denial because; an subconscious defense mechanism characterized by refusal to acknowledge painful realities, thoughts, or perhaps feelings. All of the main phrases with this definition of denial are constantly seen over the novel In the Lake of the Woods. " Painful facts, thoughts, or feelings", " refusal to acknowledge", and " security mechanism" every pertain directly to the main figure of the story, as well as the approach the publication is drafted. For this reason, I feel that this definition of denial plus the word refusal itself correctly illustrate the theme of Harry O'Brien's story, " Inside the Lake from the Woods".

The main action occurs near the area of Perspective Inlet for the shores from the Lake with the Woods in northern Mn. John Sort and his better half Kathy move to a cabin on the lake shortly after he is handed a landslide damage in a senatorial primary contest. In the contest, the main persona, John Sort, was showed have took part in in a massacre at the village of My own Lai during the Vietnam Battle. It was as well revealed that Sort later modified his armed forces documents to show that he was never active in the incident; because of this , behind the landslide reduction. After a week at the distant cabin, Wade's wife, Kathy, and the just boat on the cabin strangely disappear. Irrespective of a massive search, no track of Kathy or the motorboat is never found. More than a month later, Steve Wade mind out in a tiny boat to search for his misplaced wife and he also is never seen again.

Given that we have the main storyline, we can go more deeply into the theme of the story, denial. " Painful realities, thoughts, or perhaps feelings". This phrase is definitely directly associated with John Wade's experiences from his years as a child and The Vietnam War. In his childhood years, John Wade definitely experienced some " painful realities" to deal with. In my opinion, the original way to obtain Wade's mental problems stem from his father. John's father was an alcoholic and verbally abusive towards him. A serious...
