Chapter eleven (" Thief Barons and Rebels" ) summary

Chapter 11, " Robber Barons and Rebels” details incidents occurring in 1877 and beyond. During this time period, labor was rewarded depending on race, sex, nationality, and social category. Steam and electricity changed jobs and increased performance. New inventions, such as produced ice, the product, and the computation, allowed the meat sector and other corporations to become possible. The railroads became a huge industry of times, and bribed many officials. The monopolization of companies raised various wealthy entrepreneurs. Such as, L. P Morgan, John D. Rockefeller, and Andrew Carnegie. The olive oil company beneath Rockefeller prospered. Andrew Carnegie replicated the Bessemer Procedure in which he made his lot of money through stainlesss steel. He sold his metal company to J. G. Morgan. J. P Morgan formed the US Steel Corporation creating one more monopoly. In 1884 Grover Cleveland started to be president. This individual supported the top companies, and did not give aid to Texan maqui berry farmers when they asked it. During 1889 through 1893 Benjamin Harrison was president. Throughout his term the Sherman Anti-Trust Action was approved it forbade combinations in restraint of trade. It was used to reduce labor unions or labor combinations. The Fourteenth Modification was created to support freed slaves, but the corporations used it to call themselves people in court, and decreed that, as such, that they could not be deprived of their property by a state with no " due process of law”. During this, education was spreading, and having easier to access. However , the federal government often used the school-houses to simply prepare the kids to maintain the system. Immigrants were poring into the region, and ground-breaking talk began to stir the crowds. Many persons resented the immigrants, and rioted against them. Unions were produced to hit at the unfair employers. Many women joined the Knights of Labor to protest the wages and hours these were given. Various strikes came to exist that...
